A hand tap is a precision-cutting tool used in metalworking and machining to create internal threads (female screw threads) inside a pre-drilled hole. These threads allow for the insertion of screws or bolts to form a secure mechanical connection. Hand taps are most commonly used in manual threading applications, though they can also be used with machines when appropriate.
Unlike machine taps, which are designed for use with tapping machines or CNC systems, hand taps are designed for manual use and are generally operated using a tap wrench, which provides the leverage and control needed for precise threading. Due to the manual nature of the process, hand taps are ideal for low-volume work, repair tasks, and threading where a high level of tactile control is beneficial.
